Hacienda Iluminada in Maricao, Puerto Rico isn't a typical coffee farm . It's a farm full of energy and life! Every animal here is part of our big family, and they are important to keeping our farm sustainable. The Home for Different Animals

At Hacienda Iluminada we are on a mission to sustainability and the care for the planet has led us to be a home to different animals. We have different types of animals at the farm, like birds, cows, horses, donkeys, bunnies, and even ostriches. Each one of these animals helps our farm to be sustainable.

For example birds, they found refuge in Hacienda Iluminada and its trees. When Hacienda Iluminada opened we had a small aviary for birds that soon became bigger because of the amount of birds that found a home here. Then we have Romeo and Juliet the donkeys that are deeply in love we couldn’t get them away from each other so they have space to be. Then we have the small family of ostriches full of life with their own space to run around and be happy. Then we have our beautiful cows, with their personality these amazing animals are super friendly so you can pet them whenever you come near them.

As we mentioned we are not a typical coffee farm, we ahvie different animals, each with its personality that bring life to Hacenda Iluminada! Now lets talk about how each one of these animals helps us in the farm!

Why are our Animals Important on the Farm

Animals are important to our Haciena iluminada because they help significantly to sustainability with the different roles that help with environmental health. Our goal is to become 100% agroforestry in the next three years, and animals are an integral part of making that happen! We take pride in not using any harmful chemicals to maintain our farm. Instead, we use a machete to control weeds. But did you know that our cows and goats can help us with that too? Their waste works as an organic soil fertilizer, which is great for the soil and the environment. Our lovely chickens also play an important role on the farm. They eat insects and some weeds, which helps us control pests without using any harmful pesticides. These small actions form our animals help us take care of the farm without having to harm nature.
