The Basics of Coffee Farming

When hacienda iluminda was first sold to us. It was in bad condition, most of the plantation was dead, and we didn’t know what type of coffee we had at our hands and where to start, so thought allowed us to get to know our farm and the amazing coffee we have! So what were the basics that we had to cover at the beginning? Let’s get into it

  1. Know Your Coffee

This is very important to grow your coffee! There are two coffee types, arabica, and robusta, each one with different flavor notes and care. So you must know what is growing at your farm in order to give it the proper attention

2. Learn about your land

It’s important to understand the geography, topography, and Ph of the location your coffee farm is in. This is very important now that considering all of these elements you will know if there will be an optimal growth for the coffee plants or if there is anything you must change or take into consideration.

3. Climate

Will your coffee grow with the climate that you are in? Coffee usually needs a more stable climate in order to grow efficiently now that if it's too dry the plantation can get dry air and not grow at all. It’s recommended for coffee to grow in a climate where the temperature is between 60- 70 F with good elevations

4. What will your farm practices be?

At Hacienda Iluminada we are focused on sustainability. We don't use machinery or weed killers, we have animals a our arms, and our coffee beans are hand-picked with the goal of a healthier planet. So what will you be? Will you innovate something new I’m your farm? This is an important aspect to understand

5. What is the future of your coffee?

Learn about the coffee business, where can you sell your coffee, to who the will buyers be. At Hacienda Iluminada this was a a decision that took time to define, we were not sure who sold our single-origin coffee. Of course, in the end, we decided to focus.
