Did you know that coffee has been around in Puerto Rico since the 1700s? It was introduced during the Spanish colonization. It turns out that Puerto Rico has the best climate and soil for cultivating coffee, and was the main producer of coffee. Puerto Rico distributed coffee to different parts of the world, including to the popes and kings of Europe! Isn't that amazing? However, due to external problems, coffee production declined. But in many towns in Puerto Rico, their main income comes from coffee production and distribution. For example, in Maricao, where Hacienda Iluminada is, the main source of income is coffee, and there is an amazing coffee culture.
